Job Description
The incumbent assists
the Lab Coordinator and the Program Coordinator in the planning and execution
of the laboratories for the BSC 2010L and BSC 2011L sequence, and for BSC
2005L. The incumbent is administratively directed by the Lab Coordinator
of the Biological Sciences Teaching Program.
Responsible for the proper setup of each lab, including setup of electronic and
other equipment needed in the lab, preparation of chemical solutions, arranging
microscope slides, preparation of display materials and any live organisms; verifies
that all laboratory exercises function as designed.
Responsible for cleanup of labs; ensuring their availability when deemed necessary.
Sees that all needed materials are available for each lab; coordinates the purchase
of dated live material from vendors and maintains necessary inventory of expendables;
coordinates with Collector to make use of locally available material where appropriate;
responsible for maintenance of preserved material, maintains cultures of live
for use in the labs, including care of the greenhouse assigned to the teaching
program.
Responsible for the maintenance of labs during the course of the lab, including
resupply of expendable lab materials; cleaning and repairing equipment such as
Spectronic 20, Mettler balance, water baths, incubators, projectors, computers,
VCRs, laser disc players, and both compound and dissecting microscopes; maintains
an inventory of parts to facilitate repairs when equipment breaks.
Assist in the development of new labs for the teaching program & new materials
for present labs.
Create & maintain adequate safety equipment & procedures for labs; responsible
for the purchase of appropriate safety equipment & first aid kits for the
lab, restocks first aid kits as needed; sees that all lab personnel are familiar
w/ the toxic chemicals (and their antidotes) used in the labs, and that each
person sign the appropriate waiver; maintains reference books of relevant chemical
data in the labs; supervises the proper use and disposal of hazardous chemicals.
Maintain an up-to-date inventory of Biological Sciences equipment and supplies,
including a yearly inventory of all OCO equipment.
Responsible for interviewing, hiring, and training such OPS and work study student
personnel needed to set up, maintain, and breakdown laboratories.
